Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Mr. Maambo Hammaundu has stressed that Zambia has performed well in involvement of women in peacekeeping missions under the United Nations.
Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Zambia’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany H.E. Winnie Natala Chibesakunda in Berlin, Mr Hammaundu noted that Zambia was among the first countries in Sub Saharan Africa with a peacekeeping deployment which has over 30 percent of women.
He further pointed out that Zambia has a good record of senior officers commanding and leading groups within the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions adding that there can never be economic development without peace and security.
And Ambassador Chibesakunda was elated that women were participating in Zambia’s contribution to the achievement of peace on the African continent through involvement in the UN peacekeeping missions and echoed that peace is a prerequisite for development and progress.
Mr Haamaundu was leading the Zambian delegation at the 2025 United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference in Berlin, Germany which included Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele, Army Secretary Brigadier General Dr David Sanene and Military Adviser at Zambia’s Mission to the United Nations in New York Brigadier General Oliver Musonda.
